As a 19-year-old performer who grew up here in Prescott, one of the projects I’m most proud of is the original musical So This Is Christmas, written by locals Roger Tipping II and Layla Tenney. I had the privilege of originating the role of the show’s protagonist, Olivia, last year, and I’m thrilled to be reprising it this month.
I relate to Olivia so well. For years I was part of the Miss America Organization, a scholarship program where young women aged 14–28 create platforms for causes they care about. Mental health is something I will always advocate for, and getting to portray Olivia, who fights similar battles but still shows up for her family, feels like a chance to tell the truth about what so many people experience around the holidays.
Last year’s show was magical, and this year our crew has worked hard to make it even more special. We’re moving to a bigger stage at The Hazeltine, and we have a phenomenal cast showcasing some of Prescott’s best talent, including the one and only Toni Tennille. When I found out she would be playing my grandma, Rosalie, I couldn’t help but scream! Being able to build an onstage relationship with someone so talented and kind is truly a dream come true.
The music this year is completely new. Last year the score was composed of holiday classics, but this time we have a live trio playing original songs written especially for this production. There’s even a special number co-written by Toni herself! Being in the room while this music came to life has been one of my absolute favorite parts of the process.
So This Is Christmas isn’t your typical ‘everything- is-perfect’ holiday show. It’s funny and warm and sweet, but it also tells the truth: that holidays can be complicated. Family members love each other deeply, but they don’t always understand one other. People carry heavy things quietly, and sometimes the holidays bring all that to the surface.
Maybe that’s why this show feels so personal to me. It hits close to home in the best way, and I think it will for a lot of people who come see it. If you’re looking for something real, heartfelt, and full of incredible music and performances, I hope you’ll join us at The Hazeltine!
So This Is Christmas will play in the Hazeltine Theatre, December 13-14 at 2 and 4pm. For more info visit TheatreOfEverything.ludus.com.
